Year 9 Pupils Experience University Life Through the Forward Thinking Programme

Six Hall Green School pupils visited the University of Birmingham as part of the Year 9 Forward Thinking Programme, exploring university lectures, careers and higher education opportunities.

Six of our Year 9 pupils recently took part in the Forward Thinking Programme, a widening participation initiative designed to support academically able pupils and help them explore opportunities in higher education.

The programme encourages pupils to think ahead to their future aspirations by developing their understanding of university study, career pathways and the subject choices that can help them achieve their goals. Through a series of activities and experiences, pupils gain valuable insight into university life while building confidence in their own potential.

As part of the programme, our pupils attended a Subject Taster Day at the University of Birmingham on Wednesday 14 October. During the visit, they experienced university-style learning through a range of engaging lectures delivered by academics in the fields of Anthropology and Nuclear Physics.

The sessions provided a valuable introduction to higher education, giving pupils the opportunity to see how university lectures are delivered and to explore subjects beyond the school curriculum. It was fantastic to see our pupils engaging with the topics, asking thoughtful questions and embracing the experience with enthusiasm.

Pupils also met University of Birmingham ambassadors, who shared their experiences of university life and spoke about the opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom. These conversations helped pupils gain a broader understanding of higher education, from academic study to clubs, societies and student communities.

We were incredibly proud of the maturity, curiosity and positive attitude shown by our pupils throughout the day. They represented Hall Green School exceptionally well and made the most of every opportunity on offer.

We look forward to supporting our pupils as they continue their journey through the Forward Thinking Programme, with future visits giving them the chance to experience even more aspects of university life, including theatre performances, student societies and sporting events.

At Hall Green School, we are committed to raising aspirations and helping every student discover the opportunities available to them beyond the classroom. See more on the Careers Guidance area of the website.
